But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, they all have the same principal job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Alden NY clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Alden NY radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Alden NY employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Programs

This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Alden NY residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

When you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Alden NY x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Alden NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the New York radiology tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Alden NY healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Alden NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Alden NY residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Alden NY schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the radiographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Alden NY, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to review questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what characteristics and skills you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a certain number of standard interview questions, so you need to ready several approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are numerous factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways.
