Irrespective of the name, each has the same principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. They may work in Bentley MI hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Bentley MI radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Michigan or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Bentley MI employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Bentley 48613As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Bentley MI home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Bentley MI x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bentley MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the Michigan radiology tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Bentley MI health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Bentley MI healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Bentley MI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Bentley MI schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Bentley MI, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
