These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a radiology tech does and the credentials and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Job Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the identical principal job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Matinicus ME clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Matinicus ME health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Matinicus ME radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Maine or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Matinicus ME employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Matinicus 04851As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is usually performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Matinicus ME residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and evaluating Matinicus ME x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Matinicus ME health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Maine xray tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Matinicus ME health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Matinicus ME healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Matinicus ME home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Matinicus ME colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Matinicus ME, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to reflect on questions you might be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers often ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should organize several ideas about how you want to address them. Given that there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the leading candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down a few ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.

Some Background on Matinicus Maine

Matinicus Isle, Maine

Matinicus Isle is an island plantation in Knox County, Maine, United States. The island is located within Penobscot Bay about 20 miles east of the mainland coast and is accessible by ferry from Rockland or by air taxi from Knox County Regional Airport. The plantation is both a year-round island community and a summer colony. The population was 74 at the 2010 census.[1]

Matinicus is an Abenaki word meaning “far out island.”

The island was probably long used by the indigenous people of North America as a place for hunting and gathering, and Europeans probably started visiting the island in the 16th century.[2] Early documentation of the island comes from John Josselyn‘s 1671 account of New England:

The island is also mentioned in the May 1717 deposition of two sailors whose trading ship was commandeered off of Cape Cod by pirates from the ship Whydah. They testified that they were forced to sail north with the pirates (under captain Richard Noland of the Whydah's sister ship Anne Galley), who then took a launch “to Matinicus, where they took a sloop belonging to Colonel [Stephen] Minot, one shallop belonging to Captain [John] Lane and three schooners.”[3] In March 1726, Lieutenant Governor Dummer of the Massachusetts Bay Colony documented the early tension between the Native Americans and Europeans in a letter to Captain John Giles:

In 1750, Ebenezer Hall became the island's first permanent settler.[2] Accompanied by his family, he built a house, commenced fishing and farming, and claimed territorial rights to the island. He burned the grass on nearby Green Island to produce hay for his livestock, infuriating the Penobscot tribe, who still used the islands for fishing and sealing. Twice the tribe wrote letters to Royal authorities in Boston, complaining about Hall. In the second, delivered for forwarding on April 25, 1753, to Fort Richmond, they warned, "if you don't remove him in two months, we shall be obliged to do it ourselves."[2] Though Hall was ordered to leave Matinicus, he continued his residence there, and the Penobscots waited not two months but a little over four years before taking action. After a multiple day siege on his house, they killed and scalped Hall on June 10, 1757.
