And because the majority of states do require that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you subsequently work you may require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s essential that you research each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Most prospective students begin by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and often gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while location and cost need to be taken into consideration, there are additional significant qualifiers as well. For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are reviewing are provided later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology technician does and the degrees and education options that are available.

Radiology Technician Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may work in Gonzales LA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Gonzales LA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Gonzales LA radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may frequently be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Louisiana or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be working you may need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Gonzales LA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Gonzales LA residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Gonzales LA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Gonzales LA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Louisiana radiology technician colleges you are assessing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Gonzales LA healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Gonzales LA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Gonzales LA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Gonzales LA schools you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Gonzales LA, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you may be asked. You will likely be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of standard interview questions, so you need to organize a number of strategies about how you want to address them. Given that there are numerous variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the abilities you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but write down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own experiences and strengths.
