So it’s essential that you assess each of the colleges you are considering so that you can compare each program. Most potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and frequently gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while expense and location should be considered, there are other significant qualifications also. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the identical primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Riverdale GA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Riverdale GA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Riverdale GAThe basic requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to bear in mind is that Riverdale GA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Georgia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many accept additional options for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Riverdale GA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Riverdale 30274As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Riverdale GA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online style of education is much more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Riverdale GA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Riverdale GA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Georgia radiology tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Riverdale GA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Riverdale GA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Riverdale GA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Riverdale GA colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Riverdale GA, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Riverdale, Georgia

Riverdale is a city in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. The population was 15,134 at the 2010 census,[5] up from 12,478 in 2000. Riverdale is a suburb just south of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

The area now known as Riverdale was settled before the Civil War. In 1887, a railroad, built from Atlanta and Fort Valley, passed through Riverdale. Farmers in the area provided wood for the railroad. In turn, the farmers would get fertilizer. As the railroad grew, it needed more land. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Rivers donated their land for the railroad to grow, and their land grew to become one of the railroad's main stops.

In 1908, the city was incorporated with the name Riverdale, named in honor of Mr. W.S. Rivers.[6]

Riverdale is in western Clayton County, 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Atlanta and 6 miles (10 km) northwest of Jonesboro, the county seat.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Riverdale has an area of 4.5 square miles (11.6 km2), of which 0.012 square miles (0.03 km2), or 0.22%, is water.[5]
