And now that you have made a decision to enter the satisfying field of healthcare, how do you set about picking the right college and program so that you will receive the appropriate training to become a qualified professional? And because the majority of states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you subsequently practice you might require training to pass a licensing exam. So it’s important that you research each of the schools you are looking at in order to compare each program. Most potential students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and typically gravitate toward the lowest cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are other important qualifiers also. For example, you must ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they offer internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are presented later in this article. But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

Radiology Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical principal job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Wauchula FL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Wauchula FL medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to consider is that Wauchula FL radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Wauchula FL employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Wauchula 33873As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is usually provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Wauchula FL home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Wauchula FL x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Wauchula FL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Florida xray tech colleges you are interested in have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Wauchula FL health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Wauchula FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Wauchula FL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Wauchula FL schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Wauchula FL, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to consider questions you might be asked. Among the things that recruiters often ask radiographer applicants is "What made you pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what qualities and abilities you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should prepare a number of strategies about how you want to respond to them. Since there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, try to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the talents you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down a few ideas and topics that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.
