But first, let’s talk about what a radiology tech does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Career Summary

They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They can practice in Jay FL hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Jay FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. One thing to bear in mind is that Jay FL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be working you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many provide additional options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, many Jay FL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Jay 32565As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Jay FL residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Jay FL x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Jay FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Florida xray technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Jay FL health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Jay FL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Jay FL residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Jay FL colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Jay FL, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you could be asked. What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not just the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but additionally what qualities and skills you have that make you outstanding at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of standard interview questions, so you need to organize some strategies about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a number of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the talents you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the job. Don't try to memorize an answer, but jot down some concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your own experiences and strengths.
