These inquiries and others you should ask the colleges you are reviewing are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical principal job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They may work in Denair CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Denair CA medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Denair CA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several offer other options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Denair CA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Denair 95316As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is typically performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Denair CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Denair CA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Denair CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the California xray technician colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Denair CA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Denair CA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Denair CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Denair CA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Denair CA, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
