But first, let’s explore what a radiology technician does and the degrees and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Canyon Country CA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Canyon Country CA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Canyon Country CA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in California or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Canyon Country CA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Canyon Country CA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just confirm that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Canyon Country CA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Canyon Country CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the California xray tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Canyon Country CA health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Canyon Country CA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Canyon Country CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Canyon Country CA schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Canyon Country CA, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Canyon Country California

Canyon Country, Santa Clarita, California

Canyon Country is a community and district within the city of Santa Clarita, located in northwestern Los Angeles County, California, United States.

Canyon Country is north of the San Fernando Valley via Newhall Pass through the Santa Susana and San Gabriel Mountains. Canyon Country is located in the upper watershed of the Santa Clara River in the Santa Clarita Valley and Sierra Pelona Mountains foothills.

The area was the ancestral homeland of the Tataviam people for over five hundred years, and other tribes before then, such as the Tongva, Kitanemuk, and Serrano people. After the Spanish invasion, the valley first became grazing lands of the Mission San Fernando Rey de EspaƱa around 1790. In 1834, after Mexican Independence, it became part of the Rancho San Francisco land grant centered on the confluence of the Santa Clara River and Castaic Creek.[2]

In the 1880s the rancho become the Newhall Ranch empire of Henry Newhall, now the present day Newhall Land and Farming Company. In 1928 the St. Francis Dam collapsed, suddenly flooding and washing away settlements and people along the Santa Clara River section of present-day Santa Clarita not including Canyon Country. Canyon Country was originally to be called Solemint. It later absorbed the community to the west called Honby. In the 1960s and 1970s the Newhall Land company's suburban developments transformed Canyon Country and the surrounding towns into a focused residential and cultural city.[2]

The house of The Crandall family used in the movie Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is located in this town.[3] A home here was also featured in the climax of Real Genius, but it no longer exists.[4]
