And now that you have chosen to go into the satisfying field of healthcare, just how do you tackle choosing the ideal school and program so that you will get the appropriate training to become a skilled practitioner? And considering that the majority of states do mandate that radiology technicians become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you may require preparation to pass a licensing exam. So it’s imperative that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each program. Most students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and often settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location need to be considered, there are additional important qualifiers also. For example, you need to find out whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, each has the identical major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Prescott AR hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Prescott AR health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Prescott AR radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Arkansas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing also. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Prescott AR employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Prescott 71857As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Prescott AR residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Prescott AR x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you consider when comparing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Prescott AR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Arkansas xray technician programs you are assessing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Prescott AR healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Prescott AR healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Prescott AR home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Prescott AR schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Prescott AR, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to review questions you could be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and talents you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, as well as a significant number of general interview questions, so you must organize several strategies about how you want to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the talents you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down a few concepts and talking points that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reviewing sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.

Some Background on Prescott Arkansas

Prescott, Arkansas

Prescott is a city and the county seat of Nevada County, Arkansas.[3] The community had a population of 3,868 at the 2000 census. Prescott is part of the Hope Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Located 100 miles southwest of Little Rock, Prescott was constructed on the Prairie D'Ane,[4] which consisted of approximately 25–30 square miles of rolling prairie, surrounded by forest. The area had been a well known crossroads prior to the construction of the Cairo & Fulton Railroad.[5] To the west lies the city of Washington, to the east lies the city of Camden, while to the south lies the Red River, with Shreveport, Texarkana, and Dallas beyond.

As of 2014, Prescott and Nevada County had sixteen (16) properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Elkin's Ferry Battleground and the Prairie D'Ane Battlefield are further recognized as National Historic Landmarks.

The city of Prescott was platted in 1873, during construction of the Cairo & Fulton Railroad.[6] The railroad was constructed paralleling the Southwest Trail[7] through northern Nevada County. Prescott was incorporated on October 6, 1874.

The original town site consisted of 48 blocks, 24 on each side of the railroad. The streets were platted in a grid pattern from the railroad line. Streets running east-west use the railroad as a dividing line between their eastern and western halves, and streets running north-south use Main Street as a dividing line between their northern and southern halves.
