So it’s important that you assess each of the schools you are considering so that you can evaluate each program. Most potential students start by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within commuting distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and typically gravitate toward the most affordable cost. But while location and cost should be taken into consideration, there are other important qualifiers also. For example, you should find out whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These inquiries and others you should ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Career Summary

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can work in Vernon AL clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also routinely assess its performance and safety. They are additionally required to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Vernon AL medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Vernon ALThe primary prerequisite for enrolling in an x-ray tech college is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Vernon AL radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Vernon AL employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Vernon 35592As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Vernon AL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Vernon AL x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Vernon AL employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Alabama radiology technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Vernon AL health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Vernon AL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Vernon AL home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Vernon AL schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Vernon AL, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to review questions you might be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What drove you to select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating exclusively to radiography, as well as a certain number of standard interview questions, so you should organize a number of strategies about how you would like to respond to them. Given that there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down a few ideas and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences.
