And considering that most states do mandate that radiology techs become licensed, based on where you ultimately practice you might require preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s important that you assess each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each program. A number of students start by searching for colleges or technical schools that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they compare tuition and frequently settle on the lowest cost. But while expense and location must be considered, there are other critical qualifiers as well. For instance, you should ask if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and training choices that are offered.

Radiology Tech Job Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Russellville AL hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Russellville AL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees

x-ray machine in Russellville ALThe primary requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Russellville AL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Alabama or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve additional alternatives for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Russellville AL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Russellville 35653As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Russellville AL home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and assessing Russellville AL x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Russellville AL employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Alabama xray tech programs you are evaluating have associations with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Russellville AL health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Russellville AL healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Russellville AL residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Russellville AL schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Russellville AL, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked. One of the things that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you exceptional at your profession. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job. After the War of 1812, the U.S. government appropriated money to improve a route from Nashville to New Orleans. Russellville was incorporated on November 27, 1819.[1]

Russellville served as the first county seat from 1818-1849 before it was removed to Frankfort (which served from 1849-1879). After the fire at the courthouse in the third county seat of Belgreen in 1890, the seat was returned to Russellville in 1891.[6]
