Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. They may work in Weston TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Weston TX medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to bear in mind is that Weston TX radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Weston TX employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Weston 75097As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Weston TX residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online style of education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Weston TX x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of xray tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Weston TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Texas radiology technician schools you are assessing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Weston TX health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Weston TX healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Weston TX residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Weston TX colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Weston TX, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
