Radiology Tech Work Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, each has the same primary job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Savoy TX hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Savoy TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Savoy TX radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Texas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Savoy TX employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Savoy 75479As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Savoy TX home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Savoy TX x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing schools? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the Radiology Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Savoy TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Texas radiology technician schools you are reviewing have associations with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Savoy TX health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Savoy TX healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Savoy TX residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Savoy TX schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Savoy TX, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
