X-Ray Technician Work Description

No matter what the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Mineral VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment plus frequently evaluate its performance and safety. They are additionally expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Mineral VA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Mineral VA radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can typically be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Virginia or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an Radiologist college, depending on the state where you will be employed you may have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, many Mineral VA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Mineral 23117As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree programs. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a large portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is typically performed in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Mineral VA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of locating and assessing Mineral VA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Mineral VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Virginia radiology technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Mineral VA medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Mineral VA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Mineral VA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Mineral VA schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Mineral VA, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. One of the questions that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you need to ready some ideas about how you want to address them. Considering there are several factors that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a number of ways. When readying an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the strengths you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down some concepts and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to include to impress the interviewer.

It was the center of gold mining activity in Louisa County, and during its heyday, there were fifteen gold mines located within two miles (3 km) of the town. A zinc and lead mine also operated in the area into the 1970s.

There were no fatalities, and only minor injuries.
