X-Ray Tech Work Description

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some elect to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may practice in Trafford PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must care for their equipment and routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Trafford PA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Trafford PA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Trafford PA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Trafford 15085As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is usually provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Trafford PA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than conventional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Trafford PA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Trafford PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the Pennsylvania radiology technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Trafford PA health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Trafford PA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Trafford PA home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Trafford PA schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Trafford PA, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's important to consider questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not merely the private reasons you may have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what qualities and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of standard interview questions, so you must ready several approaches about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession interests you along with the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job.
