Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Sultan WA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Sultan WA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Washington or the state you will be working as applicable.

Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Sultan WA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is often conducted in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Sultan WA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually find that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online school you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

After you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Sultan WA x-ray technician schools. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Sultan WA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Washington xray technician schools you are evaluating have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Sultan WA medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Sultan WA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Sultan WA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Sultan WA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Sultan WA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
