These questions and others you must ask the schools you are examining are provided later in this post. But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the credentials and education choices that are available.

Radiology Technician Career Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Regardless of the name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Freeport PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment plus frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Freeport PA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degree Options

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Freeport PA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Freeport PA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technician Degrees

This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Practical training is often performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Freeport PA home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Freeport PA x-ray tech schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Freeport PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Pennsylvania xray technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Freeport PA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Freeport PA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Freeport PA residence. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Freeport PA schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Freeport PA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you may be asked. What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not merely the personal reasons you may have for being an X-Ray tech, but additionally what attributes and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of standard interview questions, so you need to prepare some approaches about how you want to address them. Since there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can address this primary question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job.
