Radiology Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Point Comfort TX radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Texas or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many accept additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Point Comfort TX employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Point Comfort 77978As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Point Comfort TX residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

As soon as you have decided on the type of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of finding and assessing Point Comfort TX x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the schools you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Point Comfort TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Texas radiology tech programs you are interested in have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Point Comfort TX health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Point Comfort TX healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Point Comfort TX residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Point Comfort TX colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Point Comfort TX, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
