X-Ray Tech Work Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the same major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Alvarado TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Alvarado TX medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Alvarado TXThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, usually requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are appropriate also. One thing to keep in mind is that Alvarado TX radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Texas or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number accept additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Alvarado TX employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Alvarado 76009As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be attended in the privacy of your Alvarado TX home. Students who keep working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just be sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Alvarado TX x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you factor in when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Alvarado TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the Texas xray technician programs you are assessing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Alvarado TX healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Alvarado TX healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Alvarado TX residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Alvarado TX schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Alvarado TX, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's a good idea to consider questions you may be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what characteristics and skills you possess that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you must organize several strategies about how you want to answer them. Given that there are so many factors that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you in addition to the abilities you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but write down several ideas and topics that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Going over sample responses can assist you to prepare your own concepts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the interviewer.
