Radiology Technician Work Description

There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical major job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Allegan MI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and also routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to retain complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Allegan MI health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Technician Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Allegan MI radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It can typically be satisfied by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Michigan or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several provide additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Allegan MI employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Allegan 49010As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is typically performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Allegan MI home. Students who keep working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than conventional alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

When you have selected the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of finding and evaluating Allegan MI x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Allegan MI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the Michigan radiology technician colleges you are interested in have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Allegan MI health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Allegan MI healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Allegan MI home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Allegan MI colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Allegan MI, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an X-Ray Tech?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you might be asked. Among the things that interviewers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What made you choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but also what qualities and talents you have that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should prepare a number of ideas about how you would like to address them. Given that there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession interests you in addition to the abilities you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the leading choice for the job. Don't make an effort to memorize a response, but take down a few ideas and talking points that pertain to your own strengths and experiences. Going over sample answers can help you to formulate your own thoughts, and inspire ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Allegan Michigan

Allegan County, Michigan

Allegan County is a county in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of 2010 census, the population was 111,408.[2] The county seat is Allegan.[3] The name was coined by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft to sound like a Native American word.[1]

Allegan County comprises the Holland, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Muskegon, MI Combined Statistical Area. It is primarily an agricultural area that is rapidly becoming urbanized as the population centers of Grand Rapids on the northeast and Kalamazoo to the southeast expand into Allegan County.

The county has long been a regional tourist draw, particularly the Tulip Time Festival in Holland and the area along Lake Michigan. The Lake Michigan shoreline has long been a popular place for vacation homes, and that such development continues, especially around Saugatuck and Douglas. Another draw is Allegan State Game Area, a 45,000 acres (180 km2) forest attracting campers, snowmobilers, cross-country skiers and hunters. Allegan County also hosts Saugatuck Dunes State Park with trails through scenic dunes and a swimming beach on Lake Michigan. Lake Allegan is another popular destination.[4]

As with other areas of Michigan, this territory was long occupied by bands of the Potowatomi and Ojibwe of the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Indians. The United States government persuaded the tribes to cede their extensive territories to the federal government, in exchange for annuities and small reservations. The federally recognized Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottowatomi has a reservation here.

The boundaries of Allegan County were laid out by the legislature in 1831. The county was organized in 1835. At that time there were only about four European-American families permanently settled in the area. Among the first settlers of Allegan County were Giles Scott and Turner Aldrich.[5]
