So it’s important that you investigate each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each program. But while expense and location must be taken into consideration, there are other critical qualifications also. For instance, you must find out if the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they offer internship programs. These inquiries and others you must ask the schools you are considering are presented later in this post. But first, let’s talk about what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

Radiology Technician Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may practice in Plainville NY hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment plus frequently evaluate its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Plainville NY health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

X-Ray Technician Degrees

x-ray machine in Plainville NYThe primary prerequisite for attending a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. Something to consider is that Plainville NY radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be employed you might need to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several provide other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Plainville NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Tech Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Plainville 13137As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Plainville NY residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just be sure that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Plainville NY x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Plainville NY health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the New York radiology tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Plainville NY medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Plainville NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Plainville NY home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Plainville NY colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Plainville NY, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the questions that recruiters frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, in addition to a significant number of general interview questions, so you need to prepare a number of ideas about how you want to address them. Given that there are several variables that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the strengths you have that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down a few ideas and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can assist you to prepare your own thoughts, and give you ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.
