Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to consider is that Levelland TX radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Texas or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but many provide additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Levelland TX employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Radiographer Colleges

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Levelland TX x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Levelland TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the Texas radiology tech programs you are assessing have associations with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Levelland TX health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Levelland TX healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Levelland TX residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Levelland TX schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Levelland TX, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you could be asked.
