But first, let’s explore what a radiologic technician does and the degrees and education choices that are offered.

Radiology Technician Job Description

They can also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can practice in Hicksville NY clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

  • Fluoroscopy

X-Ray Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Hicksville NY radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Hicksville NY employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every 2 years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Hicksville 11801As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Hicksville NY residence. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than on-campus options. In addition to lower tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just make certain that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

When you have decided on the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Hicksville NY x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a material variable also. But along with cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you learn some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Hicksville NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the New York radiology tech colleges you are interested in have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Hicksville NY medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Hicksville NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Hicksville NY residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Hicksville NY schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Hicksville NY, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to review questions you may be asked. Among the questions that recruiters frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not merely the private reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what qualities and abilities you have that make you good at your profession. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you need to organize some ideas about how you would like to answer them. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the profession appeals to you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the position.
