Topics to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can begin the process of locating and evaluating Herminie PA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable also. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Herminie PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Pennsylvania xray tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Herminie PA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Herminie PA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Herminie PA residence. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Herminie PA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Herminie PA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Some Background on Herminie Pennsylvania

Herminie, Pennsylvania

Herminie is a census-designated place (CDP) in Sewickley Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 856 at the 2000 census.

Herminie was named for Herminie Berwind, whose husband, Charles Berwind, was President of the Ocean Coal Company.[1] The first mine at Herminie, known as the "Ocean No. 1 Mine," was opened in 1893 by Berwind-White Coal Company, of which Ocean Coal Company was a subsidiary. Fifty double houses were built for miners, plus five single-family houses for managers on Church Street. By 1900, the mine employed 271 people.[1]

Herminie was the scene of two major strikes. During the Westmoreland County Coal Strike of 1910–1911, miners were evicted from company-owned houses, which were used to house strikebreakers, predominantly southern Blacks. The strike was unsuccessful from the strikers' perspective. Another strike in 1922 resulted in recognition of the United Mine Workers union.[1]

Ocean No. 1 Mine closed in 1938 due to water problems, although other mines in the nearby area continued operating.[1]
