Radiologic technologist pupils have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. One thing to bear in mind is that Bent Mountain VA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may typically be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number offer other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. However, numerous Bent Mountain VA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. Practical training is often carried out in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. Plus online programs are generally more affordable than traditional alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just be sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of locating and assessing Bent Mountain VA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bent Mountain VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the Virginia radiology tech programs you are assessing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Bent Mountain VA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Bent Mountain VA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Bent Mountain VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Bent Mountain VA schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Bent Mountain VA, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Some Background on Bent Mountain Virginia

Bent Mountain, Virginia

Bent Mountain is an unincorporated community in Roanoke County, Virginia, United States. Bent Mountain is located on U.S. Route 221 13.6 miles (21.9 km) southwest of Roanoke. Bent Mountain has a post office with ZIP code 24059.[2][3]

At over 3,000 feet in elevation, "...it affords one of the clearest views of the Roanoke Valley."[4]

The community of Bent Mountain sits, as the name implies, on top of the large and fertile Bent Mountain Plateau. It is located in the extreme Southwest corner of Roanoke County and is in close proximity to neighboring Floyd, Franklin, and Montgomery counties. The geographic borders of the mountain are also partially located in Floyd County, which has inspired the annual "Bent Mountain Brawl" Benefit Game between the Cave Spring Knights and the Floyd County Buffaloes.

The roads through Bent Mountain are also historic. "The Salem and Bent Mountain Turnpike Company was charted in 1840 to build a road from Salem, Virginia across Twelve O'clock Knob to Back Creek and thence to the top of Bent Mountain. The road was long delayed in construction, but the route planned was eventually used, and the road is now a hard surfaced state highway." Part of this road followed the famous Trader's Path.[5]

There are two theories about the origin of the name, "Bent Mountain." One of them is that the mountain is named for two early surveyors in the area, James Bent and William Bent, who were brothers and from Pennsylvania. The second theory is that the mountain is shaped like a horseshoe or "bent" mountain. There is also a tradition that the Bent Mountain area had settlers before the rest of the region, probably soon after 1740.[6]
