Radiology Tech Career Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may practice in Barton City MI clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Barton City MI medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Barton City MI radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification mandates in Michigan or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Barton City MI employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Technologist Colleges

This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Barton City MI residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to learning is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally less costly than traditional options. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Topics to Ask Radiology Tech Programs

After you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of searching for and assessing Barton City MI x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Barton City MI health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Michigan xray technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Barton City MI health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Barton City MI healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Barton City MI home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Barton City MI schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Barton City MI, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the private reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you good at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, along with a significant number of standard interview questions, so you should organize several ideas about how you would like to address them.
