Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally requires 18 months to two years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Armonk NY radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you might need to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many approve other options for testing also. Several states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Armonk NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Armonk 10504As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is often provided in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Armonk NY residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often cheaper than traditional options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

Once you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of looking for and assessing Armonk NY x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Armonk NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the New York radiology tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Armonk NY medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Armonk NY healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Armonk NY residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Armonk NY schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Armonk NY, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to review questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer prospects is "What made you select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not merely the private reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but also what attributes and talents you have that make you exceptional at what you do. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you should prepare a number of strategies about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can answer this primary question in a variety of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but write down some ideas and anecdotes that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to formulate your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to wow the recruiter.
