  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. Something to consider is that Wallingford PA radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many accept additional options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, numerous Wallingford PA employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Wallingford 19086As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your online degree, a significant portion of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Wallingford PA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less expensive than on-campus options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.

What to Ask Radiographer Schools

As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Wallingford PA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Wallingford PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Pennsylvania xray tech programs you are interested in have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Wallingford PA healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Wallingford PA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Wallingford PA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Wallingford PA schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Wallingford PA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
