  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Sardinia OH radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in Ohio or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be working you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number provide additional alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Sardinia OH employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Colleges

This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Sardinia OH home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally less costly than conventional options. Along with reduced tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Schools

When you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Sardinia OH x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be an important factor also. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Sardinia OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Ohio radiology tech programs you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Sardinia OH medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Sardinia OH healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Sardinia OH home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Sardinia OH colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Sardinia OH, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
