And because the majority of states do require that radiology technicians become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you might require preparation to pass a licensing test. So it’s imperative that you research each of the colleges you are looking at in order to evaluate each program. A number of potential students start by looking for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their residences. Next, they check tuition and usually settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location must be taken into account, there are additional important qualifications also. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are presented later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray tech does and the credentials and training choices that are available.

Radiology Tech Occupation Summary

There are a number of professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same major job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may work in Richfield UT hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and routinely analyze its functionality and safety. They are also expected to keep complete records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Richfield UT health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to finish and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are acceptable also. One thing to consider is that Richfield UT radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Utah or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician college, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other options for testing as well. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. However, many Richfield UT employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Richfield 84701As a part of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Clinical training is often performed in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Richfield UT home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online style of education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally less expensive than on-campus options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Richfield UT x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you factor in when evaluating colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Richfield UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the Utah radiology tech programs you are interested in have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Richfield UT health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Richfield UT healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Richfield UT home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Richfield UT schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Richfield UT, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Want to Be an Xray Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's a good idea to reflect on questions you might be asked. Among the questions that interviewers typically ask radiographer candidates is "What made you decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and talents you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will undoubtedly be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of general interview questions, so you must ready a number of approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Since there are so many variables that go into selecting a career, you can address this primary question in a variety of ways. When preparing an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you as well as the abilities you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the ideal candidate for the job. Don't try to memorize a response, but write down several concepts and anecdotes that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Some Background on Richfield Utah

Richfield, Utah

Richfield is a city in and the county seat of Sevier County, Utah, in the United States, and is the largest city in southern-central Utah.

As of the 2010 census, the city population was 7,551. It lies in the Mormon Corridor, just off Interstate 70 about 40 miles (64 km) east of its junction with Interstate 15. The county can be best described as "rural diversified" due to the convergence of agricultural, retail and industrial activities. Richfield has developed as a regional tourist center because it is located on the interstate freeway about halfway between Los Angeles, California and Denver, Colorado, attracting many automobile travelers who stop at the city.

Richfield is remote from larger cities, about 100 miles (160 km) or more in any direction from more populous towns, while dozens of smaller communities are found in the general area. Its remoteness, plus its location on major transportation corridors, makes it central Utah's de facto regional capital, a shopping and "commercial capital of a vast mountain-valley region."[3] Many people from the region drive to Richfield to shop, bowl, golf, to attend theater, concerts, or for religious gatherings. They are also drawn to the community college, affiliated with Snow College, and go there to receive medical care. Richfield is part of "Panoramaland;" it is on the thoroughfare to several nearby national parks and national forests.

Prehistoric people occupied the Richfield area for more than 7,000 years. Fremont culture remains are found near most community sites in the Sevier area and are dated from approximately CE 1 to CE 1000. In the late summer of 1776, Father Escalante and his party of Spanish explorers passed through the general vicinity, looking for a trail to link Nuevo Mexico and California. During the late 1820s, Jedediah Smith and other fur traders crossed the area. Sevier County lies on one of the variants on the Old Spanish Trail between Santa Fe, New Mexico and California and was used by travelers between 1830 and 1850.

In the early part of January 1864, a party of ten men under the leadership of Albert Lewis came from Sanpete County, Utah and arrived in what is now Richfield. The Mormon settlers found fertile soil, good water and wood in the nearby hills. They decided that it was a desirable site for a settlement. These pioneers made a dwelling place for all ten men, which they called 'The Hole in the Ground.' They carefully covered this hole with brush willows and other materials and made a crude chimney of rocks. This dugout was located on today's Main Street. These men spent the remainder of the winter in this dwelling, planning and preparing for the time when they could bring their families.
