X-Ray Technician Work Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Irrespective of the name, each has the same primary job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, such as mammography. They can practice in Mccleary WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and routinely assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Mccleary WA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Technician Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Mccleary WA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may frequently be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing requirements in Washington or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to be licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the licensing application, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. Some states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Mccleary WA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technologist Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Mccleary 98557As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree programs. So even though you can still earn your degree online, a large portion of the training will be satisfied either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Mccleary WA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree typically find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently cheaper than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just make certain that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

What to Ask X Ray Tech Schools

After you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Mccleary WA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mccleary WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the Washington xray tech programs you are reviewing have associations with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Mccleary WA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Mccleary WA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Mccleary WA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Mccleary WA colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Mccleary WA, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Decide to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to review questions you might be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer prospects is "What drove you to decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to discover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for being an Xray technician, but also what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a significant number of general interview questions, so you should prepare several strategies about how you want to address them.
