Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to keep in mind is that Marlinton WV radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in West Virginia or the state you will be working as applicable.

At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several accept other options for testing also. Some states also require certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, numerous Marlinton WV employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.
Online X-Ray Technician Degrees
As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your online degree, a substantial portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually provided in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Marlinton WV residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to education is much more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are generally less costly than conventional options. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online school may be the best option for you.
Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges
As soon as you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of searching for and assessing Marlinton WV x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing schools? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.
Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Marlinton WV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.
Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the West Virginia xray technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Marlinton WV health care community and assist with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Marlinton WV healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Marlinton WV home. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.
How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Marlinton WV schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program also.
Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech school you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Marlinton WV, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
