Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Sidney NY radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in New York or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be working you might need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but several offer additional options for testing as well. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, numerous Sidney NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could increase your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the best choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Programs

As soon as you have chosen the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of looking for and evaluating Sidney NY x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Sidney NY employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the New York radiology tech programs you are interested in have associations with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Sidney NY medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Sidney NY healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Sidney NY home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Sidney NY schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Sidney NY, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Desire to Be a Radiologic Technologist?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to reflect on questions you could be asked. Among the questions that hiring managers frequently ask radiographer prospects is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to uncover is not merely the personal reasons you might have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining exclusively to radiography, along with a certain number of standard interview questions, so you must organize several strategies about how you want to address them. Because there are numerous variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this primary question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the abilities you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't make an effort to memorize an answer, but take down several concepts and anecdotes that relate to your own strengths and experiences.
