These questions and others you should ask the colleges you are evaluating are presented later in this article. But first, let’s explore what a x-ray technician does and the degrees and training options that are available.

X-Ray Tech Work Description

There are several professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same fundamental job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to work as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for instance mammography. They can practice in Nokomis FL clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment plus routinely evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Nokomis FL health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Nokomis FLThe standard prerequisite for attending an x-ray tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in scope. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be appropriate as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Nokomis FL radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Florida or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many provide other alternatives for testing as well. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. Having said that, numerous Nokomis FL employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Nokomis 34274As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree schools. So while you can still earn your degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is usually conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Nokomis FL residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree often discover that the online style of learning is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online colleges are generally cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

After you have selected the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Nokomis FL x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or travel to a local campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But along with cost and location, what more should you consider when comparing schools? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Nokomis FL health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the Florida xray tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Nokomis FL medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the radiographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Nokomis FL healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Nokomis FL home. Those who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Nokomis FL schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Nokomis FL, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Choose to Be a Radiology Technician?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you might be asked. One of the questions that interviewers often ask radiographer applicants is "What made you select radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not just the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and abilities you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should organize some approaches about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are so many factors that go into selecting a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work interests you in addition to the talents you possess that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but take down several ideas and talking points that pertain to your own experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to prepare your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the recruiter.
