Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish and is more expansive in scope. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be acceptable also. One thing to keep in mind is that Johnson City NY radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in New York or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be practicing you might have to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number offer other alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Johnson City NY employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

But just confirm that the online program you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiographer Programs

Once you have chosen the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of looking for and assessing Johnson City NY x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you prefer to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these essential details prior to making your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the schools you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Johnson City NY health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the New York radiology technician schools you are interested in have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Johnson City NY medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Johnson City NY healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Johnson City NY residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Johnson City NY schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Johnson City NY, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
