X-Ray Tech Degree Options

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Wenatchee WA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Washington or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, numerous Wenatchee WA employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Wenatchee 98801As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often conducted in area hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the comfort of your Wenatchee WA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online school you enroll in is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

Once you have chosen the type of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Wenatchee WA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wenatchee WA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Washington xray tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Wenatchee WA health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wenatchee WA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Wenatchee WA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Wenatchee WA schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Wenatchee WA, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an X-Ray Tech?

When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's important to review questions you could be asked. One of the things that interviewers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being a radiology technician, but additionally what characteristics and talents you have that make you exceptional at your profession. You will likely be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, in addition to a significant number of typical interview questions, so you should organize some approaches about how you would like to address them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When readying an answer, try to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't try to memorize an answer, but write down several concepts and anecdotes that relate to your personal experiences and strengths. Reading through sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to wow the interviewer.

Some Background on Wenatchee Washington

Wenatchee, Washington

Wenatchee (/wɛˈnætʃiː/ wen-ATCH-ee) is a city located in north-central Washington and is the largest city and county seat of Chelan County, Washington, United States.[4] The population within the city limits in 2010 was 31,925.[5] In 2014, the Office of Financial Management estimated the population at 33,070. Located at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers near the eastern foothills of the Cascade Range, Wenatchee lies on the western side of the Columbia River, across from the city of East Wenatchee. The Columbia River forms the boundary between Chelan and Douglas County. Wenatchee is the principal city of the Wenatchee–East Wenatchee, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Chelan and Douglas counties (total population around 110,884). However, the "Wenatchee Valley Area" generally refers to the land between Rocky Reach and Rock Island Dam on both banks of the Columbia, which includes East Wenatchee, Rock Island, and Malaga.

The city was named for the nearby Wenatchi Indian tribe. The name is a Sahaptin word that means "river which comes [or whose source is] from canyons" or "robe of the rainbow". Awenatchela means "people at the source [of a river]". The city of Wenatchee shares its name with the Wenatchee River, Lake Wenatchee and the Wenatchee National Forest.

Wenatchee is known as the "Apple Capital of the World" due to the valley's many orchards. The city is also sometimes referred to as the "Buckle of the Power Belt of the Great Northwest". The "Power Belt of the Great Northwest" is a metaphor for the series of hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River. Rock Island Dam is located nearest to the middle of this "belt", and so was labeled the "Buckle". This saying is printed at the top of every issue of Wenatchee's newspaper, the Wenatchee World, and is no longer in common use elsewhere.[6]

Archeological digs in nearby East Wenatchee have uncovered Clovis stone and bone tools dating back more than 11,000 years, indicating that people migrating during the last Ice Age spent time in the Wenatchee area. The Columbia River and nearby mountains and sagebrush steppes provided an ample supply of food. Clovis points are on display at the Wenatchee Valley Museum & Cultural Center[7] and research findings are available through the Wenatchee World.[8]

As early as 1811, fur traders from the Northwest Fur Company entered the Wenatchee valley to trap and trade with the Indians. In 1863, Father Respari, a Catholic priest, began his missionary work with the Indians. He was followed some 20 years later by Father De Grassi, who built a log cabin on the Wenatchee River near the present town of Cashmere. Throughout the 19th century, other white settlers came to homestead the land. Wenatchee was platted in September 1888 and officially incorporated as a city on January 7, 1893. The 1900 U.S. Census counted 451 residents.
