And because the majority of states do require that radiology techs become licensed, depending on where you subsequently practice you might require training to pass a licensing examination. So it’s imperative that you research each of the colleges you are looking at so that you can evaluate each program. Many students begin by searching for technical schools or colleges that are within driving distance of their homes. Next, they check tuition and typically settle on the lowest cost. But while cost and location need to be considered, there are other significant qualifiers as well. For example, you need to ask whether or not the radiology tech schools have earned accreditation, or if they sponsor internships. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a x-ray technician does and the credentials and education options that are offered.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialization, for instance mammography. They may work in Newburg ND hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist may utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must take care of their equipment and routinely assess its functionality and safety. They are additionally required to retain in-depth records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Newburg ND medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Offered

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish and is more expansive in nature. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. Something to bear in mind is that Newburg ND radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing mandates in North Dakota or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiographer Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you might need to be licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several offer other options for testing also. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Newburg ND employers favor hiring radiology techs that have earned certification so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technician Colleges

attending x-ray tech school online in Newburg 58762As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a significant portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off-campus. Practical training is often provided in local hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Newburg ND home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But just confirm that the online school you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Radiographer Schools

After you have chosen the type of degree that you want to earn, you can start the process of searching for and evaluating Newburg ND x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a material variable as well. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details prior to making your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Newburg ND employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the North Dakota radiology technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Newburg ND healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Newburg ND healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Newburg ND home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Newburg ND schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the x-ray tech  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Newburg ND, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
