Radiology Technician Occupation Description

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. Irrespective of the name, each has the same principal job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some opt to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They can work in Wilmerding PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate also. One thing to consider is that Wilmerding PA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, depending on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their prerequisites differ so get in touch with your state. Presently, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also require certification as part of the licensing process, if not it is optional. Having said that, many Wilmerding PA employers favor hiring radiology techs that are certified so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Practical training is typically carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Wilmerding PA home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online style of learning is far more convenient with their active schedules. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just make sure that the online school you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Programs

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Wilmerding PA x-ray technician colleges. You will also need to decide if you want to attend classes online or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable also. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these crucial details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are considering.

Are the Radiology Technician Colleges Accredited? Most xray technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wilmerding PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Pennsylvania xray technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with area hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Wilmerding PA medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Wilmerding PA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Wilmerding PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Wilmerding PA schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Wilmerding PA, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Be an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to review questions you might be asked. Among the questions that recruiters typically ask radiographer applicants is "What compelled you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not only the personal reasons you may have for being an Xray technician, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you should organize a number of approaches about how you want to answer them. Given that there are several variables that go into choosing a career, you can respond to this fundamental question in a number of ways. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you as well as the strengths you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the best candidate for the job. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down several ideas and topics that relate to your personal strengths and experiences. Some Background on Wilmerding Pennsylvania

Wilmerding, Pennsylvania

Wilmerding is a borough in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 2,190 at the 2010 census.[3] It is located 12 miles (19 km) southeast of Pittsburgh. At the start of the twentieth century, it had extensive foundries and machine shops of the Westinghouse Air Brake Company. Wilmerding is adjacent to the borough of Turtle Creek, which takes its name from a small stream that flows past both places.

George Westinghouse purchased land in the Turtle Creek valley in 1887 and 1888 as a site for his Westinghouse Air Brake Company and related facilities. Westinghouse then sold the land to the East Pittsburgh Improvement Company, incorporated in December 1888, to develop the site, and it began the sale of lots in June 1889.[4]

Wilmerding's most notable historic structure is the Westinghouse Air Brake Company General Office Building (1889–1890, rebuilt 1896), designed by Frederick J. Osterling and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.[5][6]

The community was named for Joanna Wilmerding (Bruce) Negley, wife of William B. Negley, who in turn was a local landowner and nephew of Thomas Mellon.[4]

Wilmerding officially became a borough on March 8, 1890. The first burgess (mayor) was T. W. Walsh, elected on June 14, 1890.[4]
