X-Ray Tech Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be referred to as radiologic technicians or technologists, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical fundamental job function, which is to use imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, such as mammography. They may practice in Ona WV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers must maintain their equipment and regularly evaluate its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Ona WV medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Available

Radiologic technologist pupils have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Ona WV radiographer programs have a practical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification mandates in West Virginia or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be employed you might have to become licensed. The majority of states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so contact your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer additional options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Ona WV employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it may increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive examination. ARRT also demands re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technologist Degrees

attending x-ray tech school online in Ona 25545As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is typically carried out in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Ona WV home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree usually discover that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just make certain that the online program you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can begin the process of finding and evaluating Ona WV x-ray tech schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when evaluating schools? Well, you need to ask if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the programs you are considering.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? Most radiology technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ona WV health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the West Virginia xray tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Ona WV medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ona WV healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Ona WV home. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ona WV colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the x-ray tech  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Ona WV, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Why Did You Desire to Become an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's advantageous to reflect on questions you might be asked.
