These questions and others you should ask the schools you are considering are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiology tech does and the credentials and training options that are offered.

X-Ray Tech Job Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, each has the same principal job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Ferndale PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Ferndale PA medical practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.

X-Ray Tech Degrees Available

x-ray machine in Ferndale PAThe standard requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, generally requires 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional related majors that are acceptable also. Something to consider is that Ferndale PA radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing

When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number approve other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Ferndale PA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program requires graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Tech Programs

attending x-ray tech school online in Ferndale 18921As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. However the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Ferndale PA home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just make certain that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Ferndale PA x-ray tech schools. You will also need to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then naturally the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should find out if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are looking at.

Are the X-Ray Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of xray technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Ferndale PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the Pennsylvania xray technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Ferndale PA healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Ferndale PA healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Ferndale PA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Ferndale PA schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the x-ray tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Ferndale PA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiology Technician?

When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech job, it's helpful to consider questions you could be asked. Among the things that hiring managers typically ask radiographer applicants is "What made you choose radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is trying to uncover is not only the personal reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you outstanding at what you do. You will probably be asked questions relating specifically to radiography, as well as a certain number of routine interview questions, so you should organize several approaches about how you want to address them. When preparing an answer, attempt to include the reasons the profession appeals to you along with the talents you have that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the perfiect candidate for the job.
