Radiology Tech Occupation Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, each has the identical major job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many elect to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for example mammography. They can work in Plaza ND hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to take care of their equipment and also frequently evaluate its functionality and safety. They are additionally expected to retain detailed records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Plaza ND health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to two years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to consider is that Plaza ND radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may typically be fulfilled by participating in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in North Dakota or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification

After you have graduated from an x-ray technician program, based on the state where you will be employed you might have to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their criteria vary so check with your state. Presently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional options for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. Having said that, many Plaza ND employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.

Online X-Ray Technologist Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Plaza 58771As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a substantial amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an internship off-campus. Clinical training is often performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Plaza ND residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically find that the online style of education is much more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than conventional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges

When you have selected the type of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of searching for and assessing Plaza ND x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be important. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenses will be an important factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you look at when evaluating schools? Well, you should ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you find out some of these important details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Plaza ND health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the North Dakota xray tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Plaza ND healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Plaza ND healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Plaza ND residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Plaza ND colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the radiographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Plaza ND, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

Why Did You Want to Be an Xray Technician?

When getting ready to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's advantageous to consider questions you could be asked. One of the things that recruiters frequently ask radiographer candidates is "What compelled you to pick radiography as a career?". What the interviewer is hoping to learn is not just the personal reasons you may have for becoming a radiology technician, but additionally what qualities and skills you possess that make you outstanding at your profession. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, along with a certain number of typical interview questions, so you must organize several ideas about how you would like to respond to them. When formulating an answer, aim to include the reasons the work interests you along with the talents you possess that make you an excellent X-Ray tech and the ideal choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but jot down a few ideas and talking points that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences.
