Radiology Technician Work Description
There are several professional titles for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. A number of radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to practice as generalists, while others may choose a specialization, for example mammography. They may work in Pierce ID hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech may work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also frequently assess its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Pierce ID medical practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.
X-Ray Tech Degree Options
The basic requirement for enrolling in an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more expansive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are acceptable also. Something to keep in mind is that Pierce ID radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can frequently be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification mandates in Idaho or the state you will be working as applicable.
Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing
When you have graduated from an Radiologist program, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but several provide additional alternatives for testing also. Several states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Pierce ID employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could improve your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which may be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an examination.
Online X-Ray Technologist Degrees
As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree schools. So although you can still earn your online degree, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is often carried out in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online segment of the training can be attended in the comfort of your Pierce ID home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online style of education is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less costly than traditional options. Along with lower tuition, costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just make sure that the online program you select is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less structured type of training, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.
Subjects to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges
When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of finding and assessing Pierce ID x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you want to attend online classes or travel to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be important. The cost of tuition and secondary expenditures will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the programs you are considering.
Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most xray tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Pierce ID employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.
Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the Idaho xray technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Pierce ID health care community and assist with job placement.
Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the x-ray tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pierce ID healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.
Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Pierce ID residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.
What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Pierce ID schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program as well.
Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the x-ray tech school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Pierce ID, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
Why Did You Choose to Become an Xray Technician?
When prepping to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. One of the questions that recruiters typically ask radiographer prospects is "What made you decide on radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to discover is not merely the private reasons you might have for being an X-Ray tech, but also what qualities and talents you possess that make you good at what you do. You will probably be asked questions pertaining specifically to radiography, along with a certain number of general interview questions, so you need to ready a number of approaches about how you would like to answer them. Considering there are numerous factors that go into selecting a career, you can address this fundamental question in a variety of ways. When readying an answer, aim to include the reasons the work appeals to you along with the strengths you have that make you an outstanding X-Ray tech and the perfiect choice for the job. Don't attempt to memorize a response, but jot down several concepts and topics that relate to your own experiences and strengths. Going over sample answers can help you to prepare your own concepts, and give you ideas of what to include to enthuse the interviewer.Pick the Right Radiology Tech College near Pierce ID
