Radiology Technician Career Description

There are a number of professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiology technicians or radiographers. No matter what the name, they all have the identical fundamental job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They can work in Pembroke VA clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to care for their equipment and also frequently analyze its performance and safety. They are also expected to keep in-depth records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Pembroke VA health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Tech Degrees Offered

x-ray machine in Pembroke VAThe basic prerequisite for attending a radiology tech college is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to finish and is more extensive in nature. The majority of students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that may be acceptable also. Something to consider is that Pembroke VA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. After you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must abide by any certification or licensing requirements in Virginia or the state you will be working as applicable.

Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing

Once you have graduated from an x-ray technician school, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria vary so get in touch with your state. Currently, all states that do mandate licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number offer other options for testing as well. Several states also require certification as part of the licensing procedure, if not it is optional. However, many Pembroke VA employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also requires re-certification every other year, which can be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an examination.

Online Radiology Tech Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Pembroke 24136As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree programs. So although you can still earn your online degree, a significant amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often carried out in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Pembroke VA home. Students who keep working while obtaining their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their hectic schedules. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. In addition to reduced tuition, expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just be sure that the online program you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Radiology Tech Schools

When you have chosen the kind of degree that you want to earn, you can initiate the process of locating and assessing Pembroke VA x-ray technician schools. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be a material factor also. But along with location and cost, what more should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these crucial details before you make your decision, we have put together a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Tech Colleges Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pembroke VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the Virginia radiology technician schools you are interested in have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Pembroke VA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Pembroke VA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Pembroke VA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Pembroke VA colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the x-ray tech  college you finally choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in Pembroke VA, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
