Radiology Tech Degree Options
The primary requirement for attending a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to 4 years to finish and is more extensive in nature. Most students select a degree major in Radiography, but there are other related majors that are acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Massillon OH radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as a component of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which many schools offer through local hospitals and clinics in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or the state you will be working as applicable.
X-Ray Tech Licensing and Certification
After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be practicing you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so contact your state. At present, all states that do mandate licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the licensing application, but a number approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, otherwise it is voluntary. However, many Massillon OH employers prefer to hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it could improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program in addition to a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every two years, which may be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online Radiology Technologist Degrees
As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is no different for online degree schools. So even though you can still earn your online degree, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in regional hospitals, outpatient clinics or private practices in sponsorship with the schools. But the online segment of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Massillon OH home. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often discover that the online approach to learning is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.
Questions to Ask X Ray Tech Colleges
When you have decided on the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can start the process of locating and assessing Massillon OH x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend classes online or drive to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be critical. The cost of tuition and secondary expenses will be an important variable as well. But along with location and cost, what else should you look at when comparing colleges? Well, you need to check out if the schools are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are assessing.
Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of radiology technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Massillon OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.
Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the Ohio radiology technician schools you are assessing have relationships with regional clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Massillon OH healthcare community and assist with job placement.
Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the radiographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Massillon OH healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.
Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Massillon OH residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.
What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Massillon OH colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the x-ray technician program also.
Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the x-ray tech college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Massillon OH, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
