Regardless of the name, each has the identical fundamental job description, which is to employ imaging machines to internally view patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also administer radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Many opt to practice as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, such as mammography. They may practice in Castle Rock WA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray tech might work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also regularly assess its performance and safety. They are also required to keep complete records of each of their diagnostic procedures. As Castle Rock WA health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.
Radiology Tech Degree Options
The primary requirement for attending an x-ray tech school is to have attained a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most prevalent among technicians, generally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be acceptable as well. One thing to bear in mind is that Castle Rock WA radiographer programs have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may frequently be fulfilled by taking part in an internship or externship program which many schools sponsor through local clinics and hospitals in their area. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Washington or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.
Radiologic Technologist Certification and Licensing
Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be employed you may need to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so get in touch with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is voluntary. However, numerous Castle Rock WA employers would rather hire radiology techs that are certified so it might improve your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also requires re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing ed, or by passing an exam.
Online Radiology Tech Schools
As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable portion of the training will be fulfilled either in a college lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually provided in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the schools. But the online section of the training may be attended in the comfort of your Castle Rock WA residence. Students who continue working while obtaining their degree often find that the online style of education is far more practical with their active schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online college you select is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.
Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Programs
After you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of finding and evaluating Castle Rock WA x-ray tech colleges. You will also need to decide if you prefer to attend classes online or commute to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then obviously the location of the college will be critical. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenditures will be an important factor as well. But along with cost and location, what else should you factor in when comparing schools? Well, you need to check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor externship or internship programs. To help you uncover some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you must ask the colleges you are considering.
Are the Radiology Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of xray tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Castle Rock WA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.
Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the Washington xray technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with regional hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Castle Rock WA medical community and help with obtaining employment.
Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the radiographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Castle Rock WA healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Castle Rock WA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.
What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Castle Rock WA colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.
Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the radiographer college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Castle Rock WA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
