Radiology Technician Occupation Description
There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technicians or technologists). They may also be referred to as radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical major job description, which is to use imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while there are those that have chosen a specialty, for example mammography. They may work in Pasadena MD clinics, hospitals, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers must take care of their equipment and also routinely analyze its performance and safety. They are also required to retain detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Pasadena MD health practitioners, they must adhere to a code of conduct and a high professional standard.
Radiology Technician Degree Options
The standard requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have earned a high school diploma or equivalent. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among techs, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in nature. The majority of students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that are appropriate also. Something to consider is that Pasadena MD radiographer colleges have a practical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in Maryland or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.
X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing
After you have graduated from an Radiologist program, depending on the state where you will be employed you may need to become licensed. Most states do require licensing, and their requirements differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensure will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many offer additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as a component of the licensing procedure, if not it is voluntary. However, many Pasadena MD employers will only hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it may enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online X-Ray Technologist Classes
As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech schools will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree programs. So while you can still earn your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be completed either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Practical training is often performed in local family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online portion of the training may be accessed in the comfort of your Pasadena MD residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree typically discover that the online approach to learning is far more convenient with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are generally cheaper than on-campus alternatives. Along with lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just be sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less structured style of training, then online classes may be the right choice for you.
What to Ask Radiology Tech Colleges
As soon as you have selected the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of locating and evaluating Pasadena MD x-ray tech schools. You will also need to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or commute to a nearby campus. If you choose the latter, then obviously the location of the school will be relevant. The price of tuition and secondary expenses will be a material factor also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you factor in when reviewing colleges? Well, you should check out if the colleges are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these essential details before you make your selection, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.
Are the Radiology Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of xray tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Pasadena MD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.
Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the Maryland xray technician programs you are reviewing have partnerships with area clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Pasadena MD medical community and assist with job placement.
Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the x-ray tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pasadena MD healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Pasadena MD home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.
How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Pasadena MD schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray technician program also.
Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the radiographer school you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Pasadena MD, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
