Irrespective of the name, each has the identical primary job description, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally view patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also administer radiation therapy for treating cancer. Many elect to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, such as mammography. They may work in Oley PA hospitals, clinics, family practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technician might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans

  • Fluoroscopy

Radiologic technologist students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among technicians, normally takes 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete and is more comprehensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are additional similar majors that may be appropriate as well. Something to keep in mind is that Oley PA radiographer schools have a clinical training or lab component as part of their curriculum. It may often be fulfilled by participating in an internship or externship program which a large number of schools sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. After you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you must abide by any licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or the state you will be practicing in as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an Radiologist school, depending on the state where you will be working you may have to become licensed. Most states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites vary so check with your state. At present, all states that do require licensure will recognize The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam for the purpose of licensing, but many offer other alternatives for testing also. Some states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Oley PA employers will only hire radiology techs that are certified so it could increase your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program involves graduation from an accepted program as well as a passing score on their comprehensive exam. ARRT also calls for re-certification every other year, which may be met with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online X-Ray Tech Schools

attending x-ray tech school online in Oley 19547As a component of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So even though you can still obtain your degree online, a considerable amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an externship off campus. Practical training is typically conducted in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be accessed in the privacy of your Oley PA residence. Students who keep working while earning their degree typically find that the online approach to education is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online colleges are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. In addition to lower tuition, expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just make certain that the online college you choose is accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Radiologic Tech Schools

Once you have selected the kind of degree that you want to obtain, you can initiate the process of locating and evaluating Oley PA x-ray technician colleges. You will also have to decide if you want to attend online classes or travel to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the school will be relevant. The cost of tuition and ancillary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to location and cost, what else should you look at when reviewing schools? Well, you need to find out if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your decision, we have compiled a list of questions that you need to ask the colleges you are reviewing.

Are the Radiology Tech Schools Accredited? Most radiology technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Oley PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the Pennsylvania radiology tech programs you are reviewing have relationships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Oley PA healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Oley PA healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Oley PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the Oley PA schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the radiology technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the radiographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in Oley PA, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
