Next, they compare tuition and frequently settle on the most affordable cost. But while expense and location must be taken into account, there are other significant qualifications as well. For instance, you should ask whether or not the radiology tech schools are accredited, or if they sponsor internship programs. These questions and others you must ask the schools you are evaluating are provided later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a radiologic tech does and the degrees and education options that are available.

X-Ray Technician Occupation Summary

There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They may also be called radiologic technicians or technologists, radiographers or radiology techs. No matter what the name, they all have the same major job function, which is to utilize imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the objective of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists may also provide radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer. Some choose to perform as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They can work in Fairview TN hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might utilize include:

  • Traditional and specialized X-Rays
  • Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Sonography or ultrasound
  • Fluoroscopy

Radiographers have to maintain their equipment plus regularly analyze its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Fairview TN health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.

Radiology Technician Degrees

Radiologic technologist students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most typical among technicians, generally requires 18 months to two years to complete depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take more time at up to four years to complete and is more extensive in scope. Most students choose a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that are appropriate as well. One thing to keep in mind is that Fairview TN radiographer colleges have a clinical training or lab component as part of their course of study. It may often be satisfied by taking part in an externship program which a large number of colleges sponsor through local hospitals and clinics in their area. Once you have graduated from one of the degree programs, you must comply with any licensing or certification requirements in Tennessee or the state you will be working as applicable.

X-ray Technician Licensing and Certification

Once you have graduated from an X-Ray tech school, based on the state where you will be employed you may have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their criteria differ so check with your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but a number provide other options for testing also. Some states also call for certification as a component of the licensing process, if not it is optional. However, numerous Fairview TN employers would rather hire radiology techs that have earned certification so it might enhance your career options to become certified. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous exam. ARRT also demands re-certification every two years, which can be satisfied with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.

Online Radiology Technician Classes

attending x-ray tech school online in Fairview 37062As a part of every degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have clinical or lab training included in their curriculum. This is the same for online degree colleges. So while you can still earn your degree online, a large amount of the training will be fulfilled either in a school lab or in an externship off-campus. Clinical training is usually provided in area family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. But the online section of the training can be attended in the privacy of your Fairview TN home. Students who continue working while earning their degree often find that the online approach to education is far more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online schools are frequently cheaper than on-campus options. Along with reduced tuition, expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just make sure that the online college you pick is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn with this less formalized style of training, then online classes may be the best option for you.

Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges

When you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of looking for and assessing Fairview TN x-ray technician schools. You will also have to decide if you want to attend classes online or drive to a local campus. If you choose the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The price of tuition and supplementary expenses will be a determining factor as well. But in addition to cost and location, what more should you consider when reviewing colleges? Well, you need to ask if the colleges are accredited, and if they provide internship or externship programs. To help you learn some of these important details before you make your decision, we have assembled a list of questions that you need to ask the schools you are reviewing.

Are the X-Ray Technician Programs Accredited? Most xray technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Programs earning accreditation from the JRCERT have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Fairview TN employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the Tennessee radiology technician schools you are reviewing have partnerships with local hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Fairview TN healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the radiographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Fairview TN healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Fairview TN residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Fairview TN schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the radiology technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the radiographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in Fairview TN, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
