X-Ray Tech Occupation Description
There are multiple professional designations for x-ray techs (technologists or technicians). They can also be called radiologic technologists, radiologic technicians, radiographers or radiology techs. Regardless of the name, they all have the identical primary job function, which is to employ imaging machines to internally visualize patients for the purpose of diagnosis and treatment. Some radiologic technologists might also provide radiation therapy for treating cancer. Some choose to work as generalists, while others may choose a specialty, for instance mammography. They may practice in Dunbar WV hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. The imaging technologies that an X-Ray technologist might work with include:
- Traditional and specialized X-Rays
- Computerized tomography (CT) or “CAT” scans
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
- Sonography or ultrasound
- Fluoroscopy
Radiographers have to maintain their equipment and regularly assess its functionality and safety. They are also required to keep detailed records of all of their diagnostic procedures. As Dunbar WV health practitioners, they are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct.
X-Ray Technician Degrees Available
The basic requirement for enrolling in a radiology tech school is to have received a high school diploma or GED. Radiologic technologist pupils have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree, which is the most common among techs, usually takes 18 months to two years to finish depending on the program and course load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as much as four years to complete and is more expansive in nature. Most students opt for a degree major in Radiography, but there are other similar majors that may be appropriate also. Something to keep in mind is that Dunbar WV radiographer schools have a practical training or lab component as a component of their curriculum. It can typically be fulfilled by taking part in an externship program which many colleges offer through local clinics and hospitals in their region. Once you have graduated from any of the degree programs, you will need to comply with any certification or licensing mandates in West Virginia or the state you will be working as applicable.
X-ray Technician Certification and Licensing
After you have graduated from an X-Ray tech college, based on the state where you will be working you might have to be licensed. The majority of states do mandate licensing, and their prerequisites differ so contact your state. Currently, all states that do require licensing will accept The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification examination for the purpose of licensing, but several approve additional alternatives for testing as well. A number of states also call for certification as part of the licensing procedure, otherwise it is optional. Having said that, many Dunbar WV employers prefer to hire radiology techs that are certified so it might enhance your career options to earn certification. ARRT’s certification program calls for graduation from an approved program as well as a passing score on their rigorous examination. ARRT also calls for re-certification every 2 years, which can be fulfilled with 24 credits of continuing education, or by passing an exam.
Online X-Ray Technician Classes
As a component of any degree program, x-ray tech colleges will have practical or lab training included in their course of study. This is the same for online degree colleges. So although you can still earn your online degree, a large amount of the training will be satisfied either in a college lab or in an internship off campus. Clinical training is usually performed in regional family practices, medical clinics or hospitals in sponsorship with the colleges. However the online portion of the training may be accessed in the privacy of your Dunbar WV residence. Students who continue working while earning their degree usually discover that the online style of learning is much more practical with their busy schedules. Plus online programs are generally cheaper than traditional alternatives. Along with reduced tuition, costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But just make sure that the online college you enroll in is accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn with this less formalized type of training, then an online school may be the right option for you.
Subjects to Ask Radiologic Tech Colleges
Once you have decided on the kind of degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of looking for and evaluating Dunbar WV x-ray tech colleges. You will also have to determine if you prefer to attend online classes or drive to a nearby campus. If you opt for the latter, then of course the location of the college will be relevant. The cost of tuition and supplementary expenditures will be a determining variable also. But in addition to cost and location, what else should you consider when evaluating colleges? Well, you should ask if the schools are accredited, and if they sponsor internship or externship programs. To help you find out some of these important details prior to making your selection, we have put together a list of questions that you should ask the programs you are assessing.
Are the Radiology Technician Schools Accredited? Most radiology tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of radiology is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRCERT have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Dunbar WV employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.
Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the West Virginia xray tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with local clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Dunbar WV health care community and help with job placement.
Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the radiographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Dunbar WV healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.
Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Dunbar WV residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.
How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the Dunbar WV schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the x-ray tech program as well.
Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the x-ray tech school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in Dunbar WV, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Radiologic Technologist?
When preparing to interview for an X-Ray Tech position, it's helpful to consider questions you might be asked. One of the things that hiring managers often ask radiographer applicants is "What drove you to choose radiography as a profession?". What the interviewer is attempting to learn is not merely the personal reasons you might have for becoming an Xray technician, but also what attributes and skills you possess that make you good at what you do. You will likely be asked questions pertaining primarily to radiography, in addition to a significant number of routine interview questions, so you must prepare several ideas about how you would like to respond to them. Considering there are several factors that go into selecting a career, you can answer this fundamental question in a multitude of ways. When formulating an answer, attempt to include the reasons the work appeals to you in addition to the abilities you possess that make you an exceptional X-Ray tech and the best choice for the position. Don't attempt to memorize an answer, but write down a few concepts and talking points that pertain to your personal strengths and experiences. Reviewing sample responses can help you to develop your own concepts, and provide ideas of what to discuss to enthuse the recruiter.Select the Ideal Radiology Tech Program near Dunbar WV
